Developing Financial Literacy

According to the Literacy Information and Communication System (LINCS), financial literacy..’ means having the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to make financial decisions that promote financial self-sufficiency, stability, and well-being.

1. Be Aware of How You Spend Money

It’s important to be aware of where your hard-earned money is going! Be aware of your spending habits such as buying morning coffee, dining out, or entertainment. Make sure that your spending habits are in line with your budget. Small changes like making coffee at home or more home cooking, can make a big impact on your financial health.

2. Create and maintain a monthly budget

Creating a budget starts by analyzing your income, expenses and savings.

By analyzing where your money is going, you can ensure you are living within your means. Additionally, you can adjust your budget as emergencies or other factors that impact your budget occur.

3. Create an emergency fund

Accidents happen of all kinds – from auto to medical and more, it’s important to be financially prepared.

By having an Enbright Special Savings Account, you can set aside funds for when you need them the most.

4. Check your Credit Report and Use it Wisely

One aspect of being financially aware is knowing your current credit score. For benchmarking purposes, it’s important to know your current credit score, so you can monitor your progress.

A Credit Report will also show you any incorrect or derogatory information that may impact to your credit score.  Your credit score is another critical part of your financial well-being. Things like late payments, too much debt, or high balances negatively affect your credit score.

Using your Credit wisely is also important. It’s important to pay the balance each month with a goal of not carrying any credit card debt.

5. Maintain Financial Records

Whether it’s keeping a hard copy or a digital one, it’s important to develop and maintain a system for recording financial records. Important financial information such as banking and tax records should be readily accessible.

One resource available for building financial literacy is your very own credit union!

Enbright Credit Union’s blog frequently posts short financial literacy lessons and infographics to help support and educate its memberships.
